Academic Programmes

Higher Degrees by Research

New Generation Universities “do different things” to span the main focus areas of teaching and learning, research and community service, under a broader, integrated focus of serving society and, more particularly, their immediate communities (Louw, 2008)

VUT is committed to bringing together multidisciplinary teams to work with commerce, industry and the community together with government departments on projects that are both relevant and beneficial to the industry and community.

The successful conclusion of a higher degree qualification is the result of sustained intellectual activity on the part of the candidate, under the supervision of a member of the academic staff and within a Faculty which provides appropriate resources and support to the candidate. A higher degree qualification provides evidence of independent thought and the ability to manage a research project in a given timeframe. It could allow you to develop a new specialization or change academic fields.

A higher degree qualification is a demanding undertaking that will take a number of years to complete. It is likely to involve extended hours to absorb and digest vast amounts of existing information, to develop new data or ideas and, with the assistance of your supervisor, to distil these into a well-structured and clearly written research thesis. Studying towards a higher degree provides the opportunity to tackle completely new research and different research methods from those previously used, or build on research already undertaken. Students can complete a higher degree in one of the available Research Focus Areasavailable at the VUT. There are also likely to be new opportunities for interaction with other researchers and people who are established in their professions.

The Vaal University of Technology offers a wide range of Masters (MTech) and Doctoral (DTech) degrees in which research is the major component. Each candidate proceeds under the guidance of a supervising member of staff.
