3 Ways In Which The Modern Employer Hires
Studying a postgraduate degree often means that in the next few years you’ll likely be on the job search looking for employment. Unless you’re an academic for life; then you’re forgiven. So, with regards to your prospective job search, we thought we’d give you a heads up regarding the new techniques used by businesses to find interns or fill a company’s vacancy. Who knows; those post-grad business students might learn a thing or two from this blog too!
Multiple Channels
The important thing to remember is that potential employers aren’t looking for new staff through a single channel. They’re targeting their efforts across a number of platforms. Don’t worry about traditional methods of hiring, though. Businesses no longer use newspapers or radio ads regarding vacant positions. Everything is done strictly online nowadays.
If businesses advertise positions over many channels, it is important for you to market yourself in the same way. Don’t pin your hopes on a single platform, but rather post your CV and create a profile on a number of online job boards. Take a look at Careers24, JobVine, Career Junction, BizCommunity, Indeed and JobMail and create a profile on each. If you’re lucky an employer might come across your profile two or three times on different platforms, and make it her priority to give you a call.
Find Channels That Work For You
We might seem to contradict ourselves here, but there is a reason. Not every online HR channel requires your CV. Do a little bit of research considering the types of jobs most commonly found on the larger job sites. Some may be focussing on business and accounting rather than engineering. Alternatively, there are job sites that cater for specific graduates. NGO Pulse, for instance, posts vacancies and internship opportunities for those who are looking for employment in the NGO sector (#cough# Humanities student tip #cough#). Make sure that you have a profile, and you are marketing yourself on multiple job sites that advertise specifically for those with your expertise.
Skills Test
Just when you thought your days of exams were over! Unfortunately for you, more employers are using skills-based tests to evaluate the level of expertise among job applicants. Don’t worry; employers don’t always hire the person with the highest mark in a multiple-choice paper. Rather, they’re looking for a good fit for the company. You are, however, required to have the necessary skills for the position, and a skills-based test is usually used to filter out all the applicants who don’t have the required skill-set. Make sure that you constantly stay ‘in the loop’ with news, themes and theory regarding your qualification.
We really hope that you learn from these top employer trends, and take advantage of the contemporary employment processes. If becoming a full-time academic isn’t your idea of fun, then we wish you the best of luck in your job search!
