AI-Allies

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not so slowly working its way into our daily lives, whether we are cognisant of it or not. Some AI functions and tools are overt and we go looking for them purposefully, just like ChatGPT. It requires some level of input from us in the form of prompting in order for it to assist. If you ask the App how it defines itself, it provides the following explanation: “ChatGPT is considered an overt form of AI. Users interact directly with the model through conversation, making it clear that they are engaging with an AI. This transparency allows users to understand that they are communicating with a machine designed to generate text-based responses.”

On the converse side of AI, there is Covert AI. Covert AI refers to artificial intelligence systems that operate in the background or without the user’s explicit awareness. This can include algorithms that analyse data, make decisions, or perform tasks without direct human oversight or interaction. The term often raises discussions about privacy, ethics, and transparency, as covert AI can impact user experience and trust.

Outside of overt and covert AI, we have also seen a significant rise in AI Companions. These are virtual entities designed to provide companionship, support, or interaction, often using natural language processing and machine learning. They can take various forms, including Chatbots, virtual assistants, or even more advanced avatars. AI companions leverage advanced technologies to provide engaging and personalized interactions. At their core, they utilize Natural Language Processing (NLP) to understand and generate human language, allowing for meaningful conversations. Through machine learning, these companions continuously improve their responses by adapting to individual user preferences. Many also analyse user data, with consent, to tailor experiences such as reminders and emotional support. Some advanced AI companions can even recognize emotional cues from text or voice, enhancing their ability to respond ‘empathetically’.

There are various types of AI companions, each serving distinct purposes. Chatbots, for instance, are simple conversational agents that provide basic support and information, while virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa offer more complex functionalities, including task management and reminders. Additionally, mental health apps focus on delivering emotional support and mindfulness exercises and social robots serve as physical companions, interacting with users in caregiving or social contexts. Together, these AI companions aim to enrich user experiences and combat feelings of loneliness. That being said, it’s important to acknowledge that when it comes to companionship and relationships in general, nothing can truly replace the real deal. As always, the use of AI and our reliance on it should always be scrutinised for what they are, and utilised in an ethical way.
