The Department of Internationalisation (DoI) drives VUT’s global engagement efforts. As part of its commitment to international collaboration, VUT actively fosters partnerships with institutions of higher learning and relevant organisations worldwide. These collaborations aim to enhance teaching and research through exchange programmes and joint projects that promote the sharing of knowledge and innovation.

We are dedicated to advancing all aspects of internationalisation and supporting the university’s development across all spheres. The Department of Internationalisation (DoI) serves as the primary point of contact for international students and visitors, offering a comprehensive range of services. These include assistance with general enquiries, student life, cultural integration, and immigration processes.

Our contribution to the growth of VUT includes:

KEY ACTIVITIES

International Students Orientation Programme (ISOP)

The International Students Orientation Programme (ISOP) is designed to support international students as they transition into South African culture and university life. The programme aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed both academically and socially at VUT.

Key objectives of ISOP include:

Assisting students in adapting to the academic environment and expectations
Providing engaging and practical information to help students navigate potential challenges
Offering guidance on managing personal aspects of student life that may impact academic success
Helping students locate and utilise university services and local resources
Creating opportunities for students to build meaningful relationships and peer networks
Supporting cultural adjustment while encouraging students to share their own cultures and experiences
Promoting participation in extracurricular activities that enhance wellbeing, leadership, and personal growth

INTERCULTURAL DAY

Intercultural Day is a vibrant and important event on the university calendar that celebrates diversity, unity, and cultural exchange. The day is dedicated to fostering social cohesion, mutual understanding, and respect among students from various cultural backgrounds. Highlights of the event include:

Traditional cuisine prepared by student groups representing their countries of origin
Poetry and artistic expression that showcase cultural heritage and creativity

This celebration provides a platform for students to connect, learn from one another, and promote a spirit of inclusivity within the VUT community.

INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION DAY

The objective of the International Information Day is to bring together a diverse range of national and international partners to provide VUT staff and students with valuable insights and opportunities in the following areas:

Scholarships
Placements and internships
Exchange programmes
Social, economic, legal, and recreational services (e.g. banking, sports, policing, immigration, health, societies, tourism, etc.)

This event serves as a foundational platform for building and expanding collaborative activities between VUT and various international, public, social, and private institutions. More importantly, it plays a vital role in equipping students with the knowledge and resources they need to succeed in their academic journeys and future careers.

FIRST YEAR EXCURSION

The First Year Excursion is a full-day event organised by the Department of Internationalisation (DoI) following the completion of the International Students Orientation Programme (ISOP). It is designed specifically for all new international students.

The main objective of this event is to introduce students to key touristic and cultural landmarks within the Vaal Region and greater Gauteng area. As part of the excursion, students have the opportunity to visit significant heritage sites, including the Sharpeville Memorial in Sharpeville, the Nelson Mandela House, and the Hector Pieterson Memorial in Soweto.

This experience not only enriches their understanding of South African history and culture but also helps foster a sense of connection and belonging in their new environment.
