Master of Management in Marketing

VUT Research offers students in the Faculty of Management Sciences the opportunity to complete a Master of Management in Marketing. Our management courses are structured in such a way that the student may acquire the necessary skills to engage and work within organisations successfully. By encouraging responsibility in our students, we not only promote their ability to work well with others, but also instill a sense of ethical integrity and leadership within the students. The duration of study time for the course is a minimum of two years and a maximum of four years. The course curriculum consists of a research project by dissertation.

Master of Management in Marketing Course Requirements

In order for applicants to gain admission to complete a Master of Management in Marketing, applicants need to have successfully completed a relevant postgraduate diploma (NQF 8, 120 credits) or a four-year degree approved by SAQA with an average of 60 percent and a minimum of 65 percent for Research Methodology. Applicants also need to successfully complete faculty selection criteria.

In addition to the academic qualifications stated above, the following admission criteria also need to be satisfied before a recommendation for admission to complete a Master of Management in Marketing can be made:

  • The proposed topic must be appropriate for a higher degree research study and must be consistent with the academic aims and objectives of the applicant.

  • The applicant must have access to the necessary resources and facilities and budget in order to complete the degree within the necessary time frame.

  • There must be a qualified staff member holding confirmed, continuing or fixed-term appointments of sufficient length for the purposes of supervision available to supervise the proposed research study.

  • The proposed program of work must be able to be completed within the maximum period of submission for the Masters of Management in Marketing.

  • A suitable level of contact with the specified supervisors must be able to be maintained throughout the duration of the study period.

  • Where the applicant is currently employed, the capacity to meet the timelines and other requirements must be considered.

  • The proposed research topic or study does not reproduce research that has previously been submitted for the award of a degree or diploma.

  • Where the intellectual property rights of the applicant may be a consideration, a suitable agreement protecting the rights of the applicant must have been signed. Should an applicant be unwilling to sign an agreement, the research proposal may not be approved and the applicant may be required to choose another topic in an area which is not commercially sensitive.

  • The applicant should have no outstanding financial obligation to the Vaal University of Technology and in the case of an international applicant, the applicant should be able to verify the necessary financial capacity to undertake the program.

  • The applicant must possess sufficient English language proficiency.

Tasks involved in marketing positions include determining market trends and formulating marketing policies, coordinating marketing activities, controlling and monitoring marketing functions and activities and measuring results.
