Masters of Engineering in Electrical Engineering

VUT Research offers our postgraduate Engineering students the opportunity to complete their Masters of Engineering in Electrical Engineering. Our postgrad students have by now not only learned how to make things, but also how to better them and have the opportunity to use their knowledge to make a difference in the communities around them. This qualification is offered at the Vanderbijlpark campus only and the curriculum consists of a research project through dissertation. The duration of the course is at least one year of full-time study. This course will help students to develop into researchers with advanced abilities in applying fundamental technological and engineering design, synthesis and related principles to solve problems in society at large.

Electrical Engineering Course Requirements

In order for students to be accepted to complete their Masters of Engineering in Electrical Engineering they need to have achieved the following:

  • Postgraduate Diploma / Honours / or equivalent in Engineering (Power) with an average of 65% minimum
  • Proof of successful completion of a Vaal University of Technology approved course in Research Methodology

Ad hoc cases will be treated on merit.

  • The proposed topic must be appropriate for higher degree research and it must be consistent with the academic aims and objectives of the student.

  • The student must have access to the necessary resources, facilities and the necessary budget in order to complete the degree within the timeframe.

  • There must be a qualified staff member holding confirmed, continuous or fixed-term appointments of sufficient length for the purposes of supervision of the proposed research and student.

  • The proposed program of work must be able to be completed within the maximum period of submission for the degree.

  • A suitable level of contact with the university supervisors must be maintained.

  • Where the applicant is currently employed, capacity to meet the timelines and other requirements must be considered.

  • The proposed research cannot reproduce research that has previously been submitted for the award of a degree or diploma.

  • Where the intellectual property rights of the applicant may be a consideration, a suitable agreement protecting the rights of the student needs to be signed. If the student is unwilling to sign an agreement, the research proposal may not be approved and the student may be required to choose another topic in an area that is not commercially sensitive.

  • The applicant should have no outstanding financial obligation with the University and in the case of international applicants, they should be able to verify the necessary financial capacity to undertake the program.

  • The applicant must possess sufficient English language proficiency.

Career Opportunities

Students who have completed their Masters of Engineering in Electrical Engineering open many doors for themselves within the industry and especially within research in a specialized field. As well as pursuing a career as a fully qualified Electrical Engineering, students that have a Masters qualification will have developed an advanced capability to do research independently which will enable them to conduct research that is valuable within the Engineering field that will assist with the development of new technologies and products and bettering existing technologies and products. Graduates will be able to work efficiently on their own or as a member of a team and we encourage a lifelong learning approach with all our postgraduate students.
