VUT/Sasol Programme a Huge Success

Robed in academic regalia, it was an exciting day for prospective millionaires as they gathered with their family in preparation of receiving certificates of recognition after completion of their six months course in Entrepreneurship on 14 July 2016. The 5th certificate ceremony of the VUT/Sasol Entrepreneur Programme took place at the VUT Southern Gauteng Science and Technology Park. The 31 graduates and their parents/guardians eagerly awaited the awarding of the certificates.

The VUT Sasol Entrepreneurship Programme initiative started by Sasol and VUT three years ago with the aim of helping youth from the disadvantaged backgrounds equipping them with practical skills and knowledge on entrepreneurship.  In order for learners to be part of the programme, they had to first undergo an interview and out of the many entries received, only 48 of those who applied for the programme were successful and admitted.

Mr Vusi Cwane; the Vice-President of Public Affairs at Sasol was present at the event and encouraged the graduates to plough back to their community and start their own business after gaining new skills and knowledge on how to begin their own enterprise. Dr Joe; Executive Director of the VUT Southern Gauteng Science and Technology Park also encouraged the students to study further, and pitch their businesses within their own communities. He also told them to become self-employed instead of being job seekers so that they can create employment as people are struggling to find jobs.

The Vice-Chancellor and Principal of VUT; Professor Irene Moutlana was the keynote speaker. She said that youngsters that start their own business will help to enhance the economy of South Africa. She further stressed that this programme will change mindsets and serve as a platform for students who have completed their studies but don’t have jobs. “I completed all my assignments that’s how I managed to become one of top three. I was taught to draft a business plan and now I’m ready to put my new found knowledge to the test. Thank you VUT and Sasol for making this possible“, said the bubbly Lerato Mokeona.
